Havanese Rescue, Inc. Newsletter Changing Lives...One Havanese At A Time
January 2008

Words From The President

The New Year has had a very busy start for rescue and shows no sign of slowing. We continue to help ever more of these little homeless dogs. Through the efforts of many selfless volunteers, they get placed within our organization, are kept safe, loved, and well cared for, and then are ultimately guided to their forever homes. The commitment of these remarkable people is second to none and many a Havanese can count themselves blessed because of them. I am and will be forever grateful for the gifts of love and joy that are shared with our dogs every day. Our HRI volunteers "unpack" on a daily basis, in different roles, and in various ways. Each is valued and appreciated. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Stacy DeJoseph

Baggage

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled, and fed,
All nicely tucked into my warm new bed.
I would like to open my baggage Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry - So much to regret.

Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top -
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.

As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things and take me right back?

Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage, To never re-pack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage - Will you still want me?

  • Dulce has a place to call home!

Dulce was the little girl who was turned in by her previous owner because of "aggression issues" with a canine sibling. She joined our two-dog family with nary a growl to either of my girls or any of the many dogs she came in contact with while she was with us. She is a very sweet little dog with a prototype Havanese personality -- bright, energetic, loving -- and has never met a stranger either human or animal

Dulce now lives with Sophia in a beautiful, very exclusive gated community in Naples. Sophia's twin brother lives two houses down and between the two of them, Dulce is the queen of the roost and wants for nothing. (I tried to get them to adopt me, too!) She is another one of our rescues that spends much of her time riding around in a golf cart being admired by everyone with whom she comes in contact!

Sophia was a fairly recent retiree who wanted a little canine companion to keep her company. She also was a cancer survivor and decided to adopt a rescued pup so she could provide it with the same chance for a new life that she had received. She and Dulce fell in love with each other the minute they laid eyes on each other.

    Annie's Story
    173.jpg

It was a busy highway and the little gold sable Havanese didn't have a chance against the car that hit her. It just kept going but a Good Samaritan that saw the accident didn't. He stopped his car to check on the fate of the little dog he saw get struck seconds earlier. His heart was in his throat as he watched her try to drag herself off the road, both rear legs damaged from the impact. He stopped traffic and called to her, amazed as she turned herself around and began dragging herself to him. That defining moment changed the life of Annie and her Good Samaritan and now HRI foster dad, Ken. Annie has received the surgeries needed to help both rear legs recover from the damage of that day. To read more of her story and help support her in her fight to regain her mobility and happy life, please go to Annie's webpage on the HRI website.

Changing Lives: In Loving Memory of Sue Nelson
    172.jpg

Ask many of the caring, ethical people in our breed, and they will have a story to tell about Sue Nelson and how she helped them in their quest to improve our lovely breed. Those of us at HRI are proud to say Sue was a rescuer and oh so much more.

Sue was at one time the Western Regional Director and Health Chair of the Havanese Club of America in addition other committee chores. She stirred interest in Freestyle Dancing, Agility and Rally. But her biggest impact was as a mentor for new people in the breed.

Sue shared her love and knowledge of Havanese at the Meet the Breed booth at America's Family Pet Expo (yearly attendance now over 80,000), and at dog shows including the Eukanuba, and by word of mouth. She was always available to anyone who was interested in the good of the breed, both at informal classes held at her home, and by telephone and internet.

Sixteen short years in the Havanese breed, but Sue made an impact that will last forever, which is how long she will be missed.

    Rocky

Five year old Rocky is a green eyed beauty looking for a home that will love his sweet personality and cute chocolate parti looks.

Rocky was left behind after his owner died. He came into rescue somewhat timid about things. He scrunches to the ground if you approach him quickly, for example, before he understands what you want of him. He loves attention though, and warms up to pets and belly rubs. He is quite the snuggler, loving time being close to you. Need a companion while you watch TV, read a book or spend time on a computer? Rocky will be right there to keep your lap and heart warm.

Rocky wasn't neutered before coming to rescue. He has been since and has made quite a bit of progress on his marking issues. He wears a belly band while working on this. Rocky wants to please his people. He does well with training and reinforcement. While we cannot guarantee that he will ever be perfect with this issue, his response so far indicates that he will do quite well.

Rocky is being fostered in Minnesota. If you are interested please complete an application! You will wonder how you ever lived without this loving dog!

    FREE MONEY for HRI!

Well, not quite, but there's a way YOU can help HRI raise money without spending even a penny! Here's how it works!

    Go to goodsearch.com

Look at the second box on the page that follows the words: "I'm supporting" and type in Havanese Rescue- HRI. Then click the button that says "Verify."

That's it! Each search generates a penny for HRI. If 100 people do two searches a day, that's $2.00 a day for HRI or $60 a month and it costs you nothing.

Searching through goodsearch.com does not sign you up for any spam or put you on a mailing list. It's just another search engine, this one sponsored by yahoo.

Thanks to everyone who uses this option and raises money for our Havanese!
