This very handsome young man is Abe, a beautiful 3 year old male Havanese who has recently had quite a haircut. He was rescued from a mill and was terribly matted and dirty. He is now very grateful to HRI for his new haircut, bath, and a chance to show the whole world what an amazing companion he is becoming.

Abe loves more than anything to run like the wind. He puts his tail and head up and runs with the pure joy of not being surrounded by a metal cage. His foster mom swears she gets the feeling it’s the first time he’s ever been able to do that…and she’s probably right. Since his new haircut has left him a tad ‘naked’, and with the weather getting chilly, his foster mom has had to put him in warm clothes at times.Especially cute is Abe sporting adorable pajamas and running happily outside with not a care in the world. He is also a very smart young man. He has learned in a very short time how to use the doggie door and his housetraining is coming along well. For the first time he actually scratched the door to be let out!

Abe is a little leery of strangers but is slowly learning to trust. He tends to run away when approached but if his foster mom or a stranger crouches down and remains still, he’ll come for scratches behind the ears, a pat on the head and a backrub. In fact, he will spend hours in his foster mom’s lap totally relaxed, enjoying a massage and being petted.

He dearly loves his treats (sometimes a little too enthusiastically!), so he’s learning to be a gentleman and be ‘gentle’ when he takes them from his mom. One of his favorites is a vanilla rawhide donut. In fact, Abe was found happily chewing one watching ‘The Match Game’, snuggled cozily in his bed. He had just found an ingenious way of getting in to the family room when he found the doggie door had been closed! Abe weighs about 16 lbs.  Abe_2010-09-07_3

He is learning how much fun playing with toys can be, although he’s still figuring out the squeaker. Abe is also learning how to dance on his hind legs when his foster mom does ‘tricks for treats’ and she says it is very cute to watch.

Abe eats and sleeps well in his crate, and is adapting nicely. He especially likes his foster brother, and both have become big buddies and play well. Abe_2010-09-07Jammies_2

He is making huge strides and adapting very well, enjoying his new life and all the love and attention he can get. With patience and a lot of love he will become a wonderful lifetime companion.

Abe is being fostered in MN
